What PASS is

PASS (Performance Against Strength of Schedule) is a computer ranking built only from the current season's box scores. Every team starts the season even. There are no polls, no preseason rankings, no recruiting rankings, no betting lines and no results from past seasons.

It rates how well each team has played, point for point and play for play, against how hard its schedule has actually been. Schedule strength is measured from what each opponent has done on the field, not from conference or reputation, so a 10-2 record in one league is not treated as equal to a 10-2 record in another. A win over a weak FCS team counts for less than a real win. Teams without a win rank below every team that has one.

The whole season is recomputed every week, so an opponent's later results change what an early win was worth. Exhibition bowl games are left out, because opt-outs mean the teams on the field are not the teams that played the season. Playoff games count.

Track record

Across the two seasons of the 12-team playoff (2024 and 2025), the team ranked higher in PASS going into the game won 19 of 22 playoff games.
